STRATEGIC PLAN 2025-2028

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The 2025-2028 strategic plan for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County outlines our commitment to fostering positive mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

The development of this strategic plan was a collaborative and inclusive process. The Board of Directors established a strategic planning team and partnered with Spark Group Consulting, a firm with expertise in working with mentor agencies. This collaboration ensured that our planning process was grounded in best practices, included diverse perspectives, and served as a foundation for subsequent annual plans.

This plan focuses on enhancing communication, expanding programming, and improving recruitment and retention to ensure we are Defenders of Potential.

CHANGING PERSPECTIVES

Changing Lives: We believe that we can change lives by changing perspectives. Our positive relationships and mentoring programs help youth see the possibilities in their futures and strive to achieve their dreams.

SITUATION ANALYSIS

Our process began with a detailed internal and external situational analysis. This assessment helped us understand our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, providing a solid foundation for our strategic planning. Following this analysis, we held a planning retreat where we drafted our priorities, goals, and objectives.

To ensure that our strategic plan aligns with the needs and expectations of our Littles, we solicited their feedback. Their insights were invaluable in refining our goals and objectives and ensuring that our plan remains focused on empowering youth.

Our analysis assessments included the National Quality Mentoring System (NQMS), Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Michigan, a Community Survey, and a Student Survey.

  • NQMS provided a comprehensive self-assessment of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County’s adherence to best practices in mentoring programs.
  • The Principles & Practices assessment covered 11 sections of key elements in nonprofit administration and practice. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County rated between 42% and 91% in each section, with an average score of 77%.
  • The Community Survey gathered feedback from 43 community partners, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Following the strategic planning retreat, a four-question Student Survey was administered to solicit mentee feedback. Twenty-six Littles responded, affirming program innovation, communication, and recruitment priorities.

KEY FINDINGS

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County is meeting all critical functions effectively.
  • There is a need for better utilization of impact data to strengthen evaluation practices.
